THERAPY WITH CHILDREN

Many children struggle to identify and regulate their feelings. When this happens children sometimes react and express themselves in problematic ways. In the context of therapy, children learn to safely explore their inner and outer worlds through pictures, play, and stories. Art and play therapies promote agency, emotional regulation, enhanced mood, and adaptive decision making.
Kathryn has experience working with children struggling to navigate a variety of difficult circumstances including bereavement, divorce, and foster care. She embraces an eclectic and multimodal approach for working with children and their primary care givers. Kathryn provides practical and compassionate parent training skills to help parents understand and effectively respond to their child’s needs.

As a mother of two, Kathryn is versed in communicating with children and believes the parent-child bond is paramount. Her approach to working with kids always engages the parents and prioritizes the parent-child relationship.

Kathryn has extensive experience working with children who have survived complex trauma. She currently partners with Children's Aid, NYC to provide home-based psychotherapy services for children in medical foster care.
During her time working with New York City Administration for Children's Services and Forestdale Foster Care, Kathryn completed training and certification in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). This evidenced-based treatment approach is designed to help children and adolescents who have been impacted by trauma and their parents or caregivers. Research demonstrates that TF-CBT treatment helps children and teens successfully resolve emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with trauma. TF-CBT is an effective treatment for children who have survived single-episode trauma as well as those who have survived multiple and complex traumas. While Kathryn draws on key elements of the TF-CBT model, she does not adhere rigidly to the manual. Her approach integrates attachment theory and psychodyanmic principles, emphasizing attunement, creativity, and respect for each child's individuality and developmental needs.

Kathryn highly recommends children be seen in person in her Westchester office.
