THERAPY WITH CHILDREN
Many children struggle to identify and regulate their feelings. When this happens, they may express distress through behavior, withdrawal, anxiety, or conflict in relationships. In therapy, children are given space to safely explore their inner and outer worlds through play, art, storytelling, and conversation. Creative and play-based therapies can support emotional regulation, resilience, self-expression, and greater confidence in navigating difficult experiences.
Kathryn has experience working with children and families navigating a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, grief, divorce, family conflict, trauma, and experiences related to foster care.
She takes an eclectic and developmentally attuned approach that integrates psychodynamic thinking, attachment theory, creativity, and practical skill-building. Her work with children always includes thoughtful collaboration with parents and caregivers, with an emphasis on strengthening the parent-child relationship and helping caregivers better understand and respond to their child’s emotional needs.
As a mother of two, Kathryn values the importance of emotional connection, communication, and play in child development. Her approach is warm, engaged, and individualized, recognizing that each child communicates distress and growth in their own unique way.
Kathryn previously worked extensively with children impacted by complex trauma, including children involved in the foster care system. During her work with New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), Forestdale Foster Care, and Children’s Aid, she received training and certification in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment designed to help children, adolescents, and caregivers process and recover from traumatic experiences. Kathryn incorporates elements of TF-CBT thoughtfully and flexibly, while also drawing from psychodynamic and attachment-based approaches that prioritize attunement, creativity, and respect for each child’s individuality and developmental needs.
Kathryn strongly recommends in-person treatment for children whenever possible and sees children in her Westchester office.
